Education Pathways & Learning Experiences
Designing and strengthening real-world learning environments that connect experiences to future direction.
Overview
The foundation works with out-of-school time programs, youth organizations, and partners to strengthen how learning happens outside traditional classrooms. Current work is grounded in active programming across Birmingham and Montgomery, with an emphasis on experiential learning, career exposure, and pathway development.
This focus area is closely tied to both ecosystem coordination and cultural programming, ensuring that learning experiences connect to identity, opportunity, and long-term direction.
What We Are Working On
Across active programs and partner sites, the foundation is investing in program design, learning measurement, career exposure, and global learning connections — all grounded in real delivery rather than isolated pilots.
Current Initiatives
Active work strengthening learning environments and pathways for youth across Alabama.
OST Program Design and Implementation
Through ASAP-funded programs and partner sites, we are actively supporting the design and delivery of structured out-of-school learning experiences.
Current efforts include:
- Structuring daily programming to increase engagement and consistency
- Integrating enrichment activities that reflect youth interests
- Aligning programming with measurable outcomes tied to participation and growth
Learning Measurement and Evaluation
We are actively implementing evaluation systems that capture how youth develop through real-world experiences.
Current efforts include:
- Tracking engagement, participation, and retention patterns
- Documenting growth in confidence, collaboration, and exploration
- Providing partners with dashboards and reporting tools
- Using data to refine programming in real time
Career Exposure and Pathway Development
We are working with partners to integrate career awareness into program environments and connect youth to early-stage opportunities.
Current efforts include:
- Connecting youth to local professionals, creatives, and organizations
- Designing exposure-based activities tied to different industries
- Documenting youth interests and participation across experiences
- Building early-stage pathways that connect experiences to future opportunities
Global Exposure and Comparative Learning
Through the Global Impact Fellows initiative and related projects, the foundation is expanding how learning connects across geographies.
Current efforts include:
- Supporting fellows working across Birmingham and Medellín
- Documenting insights from international cultural and urban systems
- Translating those insights into local program design and opportunities
How This Connects to Other Focus Areas
Learning pathways are shaped by:
- Family engagement and stability
- Access to coordinated community resources
- Exposure to cultural and creative experiences
This work sits at the intersection of all four focus areas.
Why This Matters
Young people benefit from environments where they can explore interests, build skills, and connect experiences to future possibilities.
Structured, well-supported out-of-school learning environments create space for that development to happen consistently.
