Cultural Identity & Creative Expression
Supporting cultural ecosystems that shape identity, belonging, and creative opportunity.
Overview
The foundation's work in this area focuses on strengthening cultural infrastructure and expanding access to creative experiences. Current efforts include the development of a gallery and coworking space in Ensley, support for local creatives, and international exchange through Medellín-based partnerships.
This work connects cultural expression with economic opportunity, community development, and youth engagement.
What We Are Working On
The foundation is actively building cultural infrastructure, supporting creative pathways for youth, and connecting Birmingham's cultural ecosystem to international exchange — ensuring that creative expression is connected to both individual development and community opportunity.
Current Initiatives
Active work strengthening cultural ecosystems and creative opportunity in Birmingham and beyond.
Ensley Arts & Creative Economy Initiative
We are developing a gallery and coworking space in Ensley as a hub for local artists, youth, and community-based creative activity.
This space is designed as a hub for:
- Local artists and creatives
- Youth exposure to creative industries
- Community-based cultural programming
- Small business and creative entrepreneurship
Creative Workforce and Exposure Opportunities
We are working with partners to connect youth to creative pathways through paid opportunities and artist-led experiences.
This includes:
- Paid opportunities for youth and emerging creatives
- Artist-led workshops and project-based experiences
- Exposure to careers in visual arts, media, and design
- Integration with broader workforce and pathway efforts
Cultural Programming and Evaluation
We support organizations in documenting and strengthening the impact of cultural experiences through data and evaluation.
This includes:
- Capturing participation and engagement in creative programs
- Documenting growth in confidence, expression, and identity development
- Translating cultural outcomes into data that partners can use
International Cultural Exchange (Medellín × Birmingham)
Through artist collaborations and the Global Impact Fellows initiative, we are building connections between cultural ecosystems across cities.
This includes:
- Artist residencies and collaborative projects
- Documentation of creative processes and community engagement
- Cross-city learning between Birmingham and Medellín
- Integration of global insights into local programming
How This Connects to Ecosystem Work
Cultural programming connects directly to:
- Youth engagement and retention in OST programs
- Career exposure and pathway development
- Community identity and neighborhood-level economic activity
Why This Matters
Cultural ecosystems influence how young people see themselves and how communities create opportunity.
When creative spaces, programs, and pathways are connected to broader systems, they contribute to both individual development and local economic activity.
